Volunteer for biology activities at Maryland Day.
Every April the University hosts a huge celebration of activities and accomplishments at Maryland. Called Maryland Day, the celebration attracts over 70,000 people to campus each year. This year Maryland Day is on Saturday April 28, from 10am to 4pm. http://www.marylandday.umd.edu/
As a part of MD, the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences hosts a number of activities and events. One of those is a room of 3 – 4 hands on biology activities. These activities student help to put on. I believe I need 30 – 40 students total, and will assign time slots once I have a complete list of volunteers.
This is an opportunity to show off your knowledge of biology and help attract young people into science. For your participation you will get a MD t-shirt and a snack to keep you going for the 2 hour activity.
At this point I believe we will be running the following activities. I will meet with the volunteers before MD and go over the details of all of these. You do not need to know anything about these topics in order to volunteer. I will provide all needed information.
1. DNA bracelets- write your name in DNA code and take home the bracelet.
2. Hominid evolution- explore how humans came to be the one hominid species on the planet by examining replicas of hominid fossil skulls.
3. Reaction time ruler- test your speed and decision making with this fun challenge.
4. Who attacked Testudo- solve the mystery of the attack on Testudo using DNA forensic technology.
I hope to hear from you soon. Please email me by March 9 of your interest in volunteering.
Joelle Presson, Assistant Dean CMNS
