Dr. Marcia K. McNutt
Director, U. S. Geological Survey
Building a Career in Science: What I Know Now That I Wish I Had Known Then
Dr. McNutt?s own career path began nearly 40 years ago when she entered
graduate school to become a
scientist. After many forks in the road she eventually found herself as
Director of the U.S. Geological
Survey. There are a number of important observations and lessons that she
picked up along the way that
are not the subject of course curriculum that might prove helpful to
others charting their own career path.
For example, many young women have been dismayed by the recent article by
Anne-Marie Slaughter,
former high-ranking State Department official, entitled ³You Can?t Have It
All.² Dr. McNutt believes that
they can have it all, just not all at the same time. However, she also
assures young scientists embarking
on their careers that they will have nothing if they do not have their
integrity; it takes a lifetime to build
and a moment to destroy.
