7th Annual Native American Indian Powwow at the University of Maryland
 
College Park, MD, November 1, 2011-The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE) at the
University of Maryland College Park will hold its 7th Annual Native American Indian Powwow on
Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on the
campus. The grand entry is at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to all.
 
Native American dancers from across the country will gather together for the one-day event that is
co-sponsored by OMSE and the American Indian Student Union. As in past years, the Powwow is
expected to draw several hundred visitors from the Washington, DC/Metropolitan area.
 
Traditionally held in the spring as a festive gathering for Native American Indians, modern Powwows
bring together people of all cultural backgrounds to sing, drum, dance, socialize and honor Native
American Indian culture.
 
The University of Maryland Powwow has gained a reputation as an excellent fall family event and
“reflects the university’s commitment to exposing the campus and community to the cultural beliefs and
values of Native American Indians,” stated Dottie Chicquelo, Powwow chairperson.
 
Along with dancing, the Powwow will also feature Native American Indian food concessions, arts and
crafts vendors and educational booths.
