Research Assistant I - HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the
US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP)at Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research(WRAIR) located in Silver Spring, MD. Incumbent will work in the
Specimen Processing Laboratory in support of clinical trials, diagnostic
efforts and the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) goals
and objectives. The individual will provide technical and basic laboratory
support to senior technical and scientific staff. The studies will include
assessment of the functional status of the immune system and its
relationship to cellular phenotypes and viral loads in humans and animals
receiving vaccines as well as participating in other laboratory
investigations of virologic and immunological aspects of HIV and other
infectious diseases. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic
support services to MHRP.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  
1.              Isolation and storage of peripheral mononuclear blood
cells.
2.              Preparation of primary tissues for single cell suspensions.
3.              Preparation of cells from peripheral blood for
immunophenotyping.
4.              Passage of cell lines in continuous culture.
5.              Preparation of cell culture media and reagents.
6.              Separation and storage of biological fluids.
7.              Preparation of buffers, reagents and stocks.
8.              Perform data entry for research projects.
9.              Maintain databases and equipment.
10.           Maintain clear and accurate laboratory records and
inventories.
11.           Maintain supplies in the laboratory and keep lab areas clean.
12.           Provides other support, as needed, to infectious disease
diagnostic and research programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Excellent laboratory and
technical skills; ability to work comfortably in a biosafety level two
plus (p-2 plus) laboratory with HIV, HCV, HTLV and other infectious
pathogens; ability to work independently; ability to keep good records;
good communication and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor¹s degree in related
scientific field
Minimum Experience:  Research project experience during undergraduate
training or job experience in cell biology techniques (minimum experience
0-2 years).

Work Environment: Henry M. Jackson Foundation in Rockville, MD. Will
handle biohazardous materials including infectious agents such as HIV and
is expected to practice safe handling of hazardous chemicals.
