The following course may be of interest to biology majors, or majors in the life, social or behavioral sciences (e.g., nutrition, medical sociology, medical anthropology). 

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is pleased to announce that the required MPH course, EPIB610 Foundations of Epidemiology; (3 credits) will be offered during Summer I term. The course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7:10 pm in SPH 0303 from 05/31/11-07/10/11.

This is a great option for students who are considering applying for an MPH degree program, or who want to get a start on the required courses for the MPH degree at the University of Maryland.  Students enrolled in our MPH program may prefer to not have to take biostatistics and epidemiology during the same semester.

Both graduate students and junior/senior undergraduate students in good academic standing may take the course. Undergraduate students may take the course for either undergraduate or graduate credit. The course is not open to students who have completed HLTH720. Prior approval is required to register for the course.

This course introduces students to the discipline of epidemiology and its application to public health issues and practices. The course covers basic epidemiologic concepts and methods. Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of the varying rates of diseases, injuries, and other health states in human populations. As the fundamental science underlying public health practice, epidemiology provides the conceptual and practical tools necessary for the study of public health problems.
