Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity in Ecology & Conservation

The Fagan Lab (Biology Dept. of UMCP) is looking to hire two motivated undergraduates for PAID internships. The undergraduates will participate in student research projects and assist in ongoing lab work for the Antarctic Site Inventory. The Antarctic Site Inventory is a long term monitoring program of Antarctic Peninsula flora and fauna that is unique because it encompasses the entire Peninsula and thus provides an excellent platform for the study of Antarctic biogeography.

Students selected for these internships will participate in ASI efforts to assess the species richness of lichens photo documented from sites along the Antarctic Peninsula. The goals of this particular study are to 1) develop and test a sampling protocol for lichens that involve photodocumentation by ”citizen scientists”, and 2) estimate lichen biodiversity at sites visited by tourists in the Peninsula. The students will work with photographs taken by different people in the field (in Antarctica and in National Parks of the Washington, D.C. area), organizing and classifying the different lichen species that were captured on the photos. The students will also be expected to assist in some aspects of data analysis for the project.

· Internships start at $8 / hr, and go higher depending on experience.
· Preferred dates are May 20 – Aug 20 with up to 40 hrs/wk.
· The majority of the time will be spent in the Fagan lab at University of Maryland.
· The applicant needs good computer and data management skills.
