Voices of Social Change is a Leadership and Community Service-Learning
program that invites engaging storytellers to share their experiences as
active leaders in the local community. The purpose of the program is to
honor the social change work of these leaders, to connect people and
resources, and to inspire people to engage in social change.
Voices of Social Change is proud to present "Breaking Barriers: Advocating
for Juvenile Justice and Prison Reform Lecture featuring R. Dwayne Betts" as
our first fall speaker. An advocate for juvenile justice and prison reform,
Betts is the national spokesperson for the Campaign for Youth Justice. At
the age of sixteen, R. Dwayne Betts-a good student from a lower-middle-class
family-carjacked a man with a friend. He had never held a gun before, but
within a matter of minutes he had committed six felonies. He served his
eight-year sentence as part of the adult population in some of the worst
prisons in the state. Today, he is involved in social change and reform in
the justice system.
Please join us to hear about his experiences with the justice system.
