Subject: Need UMD students to help with PGCPS math clubs
Description:
We are looking for Maryland students with strong basic math skills who are
willing to work with Prince George’s County middle schoolers. Scholastic
Olympics, Inc., a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to finding
successful alternative education programs, has begun to launch math clubs
that are based on the game of basketball. The game is called NBA Math Hoops
and it is designed to improve the math literacy of 5th through 9th graders.
Maryland students only need to know basic math as the skills involved in the
game include basic computation through advanced work with decimals,
fractions, pattern recognition, and strategy. Students will work to
strengthen youths’ math skills, while operating as a manager of multiple
games and an overall role model. Students may work as little as two hours a
week or as much as six hours a week. Transportation is a plus because some of
the math clubs are in far-flung parts of the county. Scholastic Olympics will
pay expenses, as well as a small honorarium that may be used for gas.
