Phillips Wharf Environment Center was created to provide a hands-on
experience, especially for children, with the many species of animals and
plants that live in the Chesapeake Bay. Located in the heart of the
Chesapeake Bay on Tilghman’s Island, PWEC offers live exhibits, waterside
activities, aquarium displays, tours, and field trips. Its mission is to
‘Inform, Inspire, and Involve’ those who live in the Chesapeake Bay
watershed to take action on its behalf. In addition to learning about the
environment and ecosystem, visitors also gain understanding about how the
watermen harvest Bay resources. PWEC is offering internship opportunities to
qualified college students. Gain hands-on experience while making substantial
contributions to environmental education in the Chesapeake Bay region. We are
actively recruiting for college students majoring in Biology, Marine Biology,
Environmental Science, Fishery Science, or related field who is ready for a
‘resume-builder’ opportunity. Interns work in direct contact with
experienced environmental scientists and marine biologists. Duration is May
– August, with negotiable start and end dates. These positions are unpaid;
housing is available. Application deadline is May 15, 2014
Responsibilities: Maintenance of tanks and animals (turtles, fish, horseshoe
crabs, blue crabs, etc.) Prepare the "Fishmobile" for events. Give tours of
our exhibits/ Fishmobile to guests. Aid in PWEC events. And aid in oyster
restoration projects.
Requirements: PWEC seeks college students majoring in Biology, Marine
Biology, Environmental Science, Fishery Science, or related fields. The ideal
candidate will be available at least 20 hours a week and possess a personal
interest in the marine environment and health of the Chesapeake Bay. The
ability to work independently as well as with a team and excellent
communication and interpersonal skills are required. Applicants must be
willing to work hours beyond the standard 8-hour day on occasion.
