Description:
The Statistician/Biostatistician will collaborate with project coordinator and team members in research on dietary supplements.  Responsible for sampling plan development, data analysis, lab study design, and the evaluation of information from large publicly available datasets.  Utilize appropriate techniques, including descriptive statistics; exploratory data analyses, including graphs, summary statistics, and necessary transformations; and confirmatory data analyses, including statistical tests and/or models. Perform sample size and power calculations, generates randomization schema, and write statistical sections for research protocols and manuscripts. Requires the ability to use technical knowledge to make judgments and decisions, handle multiple projects and work independently as well as cooperatively as a team member to achieve project goals within deadlines.   This project supports the expansion of the Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database, a database for dietary supplement composition information.

The Statistician/Biostatistician will:
1. Develop and modify statistically-based national sampling plans for dietary supplement analytical studies. These sampling plans will involve multiple sales channels.
2. Develop and implement strategies for data analysis, interpretation and applications. Develop new statistical innovations.  Make significant contributions of conclusive thought to projects and publications
3. Independently identify systematic issues with data, develop and propose solutions, and collaborate with the research team to resolve issues.
4. Utilize statistical software (preferably SAS) to analyze small and large datasets, including selected public datasets (NHANES)
5. Prepare written reports of statistical analyses, including relevant statistical theory, references, methods, results, and conclusions. Contribute to presentations and proposals.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a master's degree or Ph.D. in statistics and experience developing national sampling plans for products sold in direct, mass market and natural/specialty channels. At least 3 years related experience (statistical data analysis of complex data sets and sampling plan development) required.  Experience with technical writing for publications required. Experience in scientific computing/programming and SAS preferred. MS Access and/or other database experience preferred. Demonstrated organizational skills, logical thinking skills, and keen attention to detail are essential. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment with a high degree of initiative and self-motivation.  Must possess excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple priorities and concurrent projects to meet deadlines.  Superior oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications.  Health benefits are available.  This is a contracted position with yearly renewals on site at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, MD.
