Students of CMNS,
I am saddened to inform you of the death of Dr. Herman Ammon, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Associate Chair for Undergraduate Programs. Dr. Ammon died last week after suffering a severe stroke earlier in July. Dr. Ammon was a faculty member dedicated to undergraduates -- serving as a teacher, research, academic advisor, and mentor for more than four decades at the University of Maryland. Many of you have come to know him as an instructor in organic chemistry, or as an undergraduate TA or guided study section leader. Dr. Ammon was a dedicated teacher, continuing to work to enhance student learning of organic chemistry throughout his career. As recently as last year, he secured grant funds from the University System of Maryland to provide new web-based and video learning tools to support student mastery of key concepts. He was also an expert in x-ray crystallography and the chemistry of energetic materials and explosives.
Students are welcomed and encouraged to attend a memorial service with the family of Dr. Ammon, where the department and university community will celebrate his life and career. The service will be held on Thursday, August 15, 3-4 P.M. in the campus Memorial Chapel. A reception will immediately follow the service.
Dr. Infantino
