Title: Biological Science Aid

Where: Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory, USDA
10300 Baltimore Ave. Beltsville MD.
Salary: grade level – GS-0404-01-03, 22,560-35,618 per annum
Work schedule: M-F (40 hours, 8:30-5:00)
   About: Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory research focuses on pathogens
such as viruses and bacteria that affect plants.
This is a temporary (not to exceed 180 days within a year) entry level
position with an opportunity for the incumbent to learn many new skills. We
are looking for a motivated, bright, easy to train, and responsible student.
Summary of duties:
Bioinformatics tasks can include: genome annotation, RNAseq analysis,
phylogeny, Blast analysis, data-mining, Linux, computer
scripting/programming, HTML, photoshop,3-D modeling, Bioinformatics software
programs, data entry, reading manuals, Excel spreadsheets, and General office
maintenance such as sorting documents, making copies and backing up files and
more.
   Laboratory tasks might include: PCR/RT-PCR, running gels, keeping a lab
notebook, DNA extractions, primer design, greenhouse duties, processing lab
samples and general lab maintenance such as glassware cleaning and more.
Qualifications:  GS-1: No general or specialized experience; GS-2: 3 months
of general experience. General experience is defined as: Performed farm/ranch
labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of
farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse, nursery or landscape business
planting, moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general
labor tasks; Worked as an animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store
or similar organization; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that
demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position, e.g.
volunteer work, such as at a park, youth camp, hospital, community sports
league, local fire department, etc. OR High school graduation or equivalent
-ORA combination of education and experience listed above OR A high school
diploma or the equivalent; GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study
that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of scientific or
technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal
husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

   Individuals studying bioinformatics, biochemistry  molecular biology,
microbiology, cell biology, genetics, general biology, or computer science,
and Computer Engineers, Chemical/Biomolecular Engineers, BioEngineers are
encouraged to apply.
