Job Postings – Programmer and/or Genomics Specialist

We are seeking talented graduate and undergraduate students interested in
genomics, bioinformatics and data management to assist with various ongoing
projects at the i5k Workspace@NAL (https://i5k.nal.usda.gov/) through the
Department of Entomology at the University of Maryland. You will be working
with a dynamic team to develop and maintain resources in our growing
arthropod genome database and portal.

We would like to hire individuals with the following qualifications:

Programmer. Has experience developing and improving applications in Java,
Javascript, Python/Django. Experience with RDBMS preferred (Postgres, MySQL).
Has good communication skills and is eager to learn new skills.

Potential tasks:
-	Communicates with genomics specialist and i5k Workspace team on program
implementation
-	Implements and/or improves existing web services
-	Assists in image bank creation

Genomics specialist. Can manipulate genomic data via scripting (e.g. perl or
python). Is familiar with common genomic data formats (e.g. fasta, fastq,
bam/sam, gff3). Has experience with genomic analyses, including but not
limited to read mapping and sequence search. Has good communication skills
and is eager to learn new skills.

Potential tasks:
-	Communicates with programmer and i5k Workspace team on program
implementation
-	Writes/modifies tutorials on i5k Workspace functions
-	Performs quality control on incoming datasets (‘data wrangling’)
-	Adds new datasets to existing web services on demand
-	Identifies user needs, suggests new web services
-	Assists in image bank creation

Individuals seeking to work part- or full-time will be considered. Wage is
$12-15 per hour and is commensurate with experience and skills. Work will
primarily be conducted at the National Agricultural Library
(http://www.nal.usda.gov/), with the possibility of remote work. The
positions are available immediately.
