Summer Internships with the U.S. International Trade Commission’s Office of
Investigations
The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) is a small independent
federal agency located in southwest Washington, DC, near the L’Enfant Plaza
metro and Virginia Railway Express stations.   With a staff of approximately
400, the agency maintains the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States
and conducts fact-finding, intellectual property, and import injury
investigations.
The Office of Investigations (OINV) coordinates the USITC’s safeguard
investigations; its countervailing and antidumping duty (CVD and AD)
investigations; and its five-year reviews of existing CVD and AD orders.
OINV‘s  statisticians, auditors, and investigators work in tandem with
economists, industry analysts, and attorneys from other offices to examine
markets in which U.S. producers have alleged injury or threat of injury by
reason of imports.  These proceedings have multiple phases and typically take
place over a 5-13 month period.  During this time, agency staff gather
primary source data from detailed questionnaires issued to producers,
importers, and purchasers; engage in interviews, conferences, and hearings;
review briefs filed by interested parties; and conduct intensive secondary
source research.
                  OINV interns provide valuable support for all of these
activities.  Because interns will assist in information gathering,
processing, analysis, and presentation, applicants should have the following
attributes:
1.   Statistically-grounded experience or coursework (e.g., computer science,
math, or economics) and strong MS Excel skills to assist in data processing
and analysis;
2.  Experience or coursework emphasizing written and verbal communication
skills and high proficiency in MS Word to assist in interviews, conferences,
hearings, and review and summary of briefs;
3.  Experience or coursework emphasizing the micro, macro, and/or political
economy (e.g.,  government, economics, or business) to assist in research;
and
4.  Experience or coursework demonstrating an interest in international
issues (e.g., international economics or trade; international business; or
foreign languages).
