Subject: FIRE: The First-Year Innovation & Research Experience - Open
Enrollment

Description:
The UMD First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) provides inquiry
experience and personal mentorship for first-year students through membership
in innovation and research streams. First-year students build community,
earn degree credit and are immersed in authentic faculty-led research in ways
that increase degree-relevance, academic success, retention and accelerate
student opportunity. UMD FIRE will host up to eight streams during the
inaugural 2014/15 academic year serving between 200 and 250 students.

Participation in FIRE is mediated through enrollment in the first-semester
course UNIV150:
https://ntst.umd.edu/soc/201408/UNIV/UNIV150
(Distributive Studies, Natural Sciences)

First-year students who enroll in UNIV150 this fall will be eligible for
membership in research streams in the following spring. There are currently
18 seats available across 5 sections of UNIV150. Please note that students
must be in their first semester on campus and not in the Honors College,
College Park Scholars or other living learning programs such as Civicus,
Global Communities or Carillon Communities.

Additional information about FIRE and the UNIV150 course can be provided by
the program director, Patrick Killion ([log in to unmask], x50057) or through
the FIRE website: http://fire.umd.edu/
