Project Description:

A research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. This
appointment will be served with the Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds
(OWOW) in the Oceans and Coastal Protection Division (OCPD). OCPD is
responsible for protection and management of Ocean and Coastal environments.

The intern will be trained in OCPD’s Coastal Management Branch (CMB),
specifically learning how to conduct nationwide statistical surveys of
coastal water condition. Specific research topics will focus on learning how
coastal resource surveys are designed. In addition to learning about the
National Coastal Condition Assessment, the intern will be trained on
researching potential relationships between coastal water quality and other
data including land use features, population, etc. The intern will have the
opportunity to learn from scientific, regulatory, legal and management
representatives in EPA, other federal agencies, such as the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Park Service,
and representatives from state agencies and non-governmental organizations

The participant will gain experience in:

How to use statistical and GIS software packages as tools for evaluating
water quality data collected as part of probabilistic surveys.
How to select research indicators relevant to EPA Office of Water priorities.
How to target communications about scientific data in ways that reach and are
valuable to varied audiences.
Through this project, the participant will:

Be exposed to a broad range of scientific issues surrounding coastal
assessment.
Learn how coastal assessment programs are administered and implemented at
both the state and federal level and obtain an understanding of coastal
health.
Learn how EPA collaborates with state agencies to implement the Clean Water
Act more broadly.
Have opportunities to attend national conferences to learn from a broad
network of water quality professionals.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S.
Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and
Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and
EPA.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have received a master’s degree in natural, environmental
or life sciences within five years of the desired start date, or completion
of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting
date.

The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon
recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The
participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will be up to
$52,668. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s
travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific
conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for
pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or a
participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health
and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
