Subject: Position- Computational Sciences Internship Program

Description:
Job Id (Use when Referring to Position):	ARL-1853057428
Job Type:	FTP
Location:	Aberdeen Proving Ground MD

Job Description:	Computational Sciences Internship Program
Several summer internship/fellowship opportunities are available with the
U.S. Army Research Lab - Computational Science Division. Qualified candidates
will report to the ARL facility located in Aberdeen, MD, for 10-12 weeks
during June/July 2015. To be considered for this opportunity, applicants MUST
have a complete application on file by 1 APR 15. The following documents are
required to be considered a complete application (ORAU Application,
Resume/CV, Current Transcripts, and Two Reference Forms).

PROJECT SYNOPSIS:
ARL's Computational Sciences program focused on advancing computing
architectures, cyberinfrastructure, computational methodology and algorithms
computational sciences to transform the future of complex Army applications.
The applications of advanced computing technologies will accelerate critical
research developments in the Army. Focused areas in Computational Science
include:

• Predictive Simulation Sciences concentrates on understanding and
exploiting the fundamental aspects of verified and validated computational
simulations that predict the response of complex Army systems and guide Army
materiel design.
• Data Intensive Sciences focuses on understanding and exploiting the
fundamental aspects of large-scale, multi-dimensional data analytics.
Experiments, observations, and numerical simulations are on the verge of
generating petabyte-quantities of data. These massive amounts of data are
distributed across disparate locations and pose a challenge in providing
real-time analytics.
• Computing Architectures concentrates on understanding and exploiting the
fundamental aspects of hardware and associated system software for emergent
and future computing architectures for mobile, scientific, and data intensive
applications. Computing systems include both mobile and fixed/virtual
architectures optimized for fast communications, low power consumption, large
hierarchical memory, novel and robust algorithms, high resiliency, and HPC
networking.
• Computing Sciences concentrates on understanding and exploiting the
fundamental aspects of computer science research related to ease of
programming, computing environments, languages, and reusable programming
models for Army specific applications.

ARL is seeking undergraduate, graduate students and post docs to work with
ARL researchers to explore and evaluate capabilities that augment current
research efforts. Interns will work in teams with guidance from an ARL
researcher mentor. Interns are required to write a report on their summer
research and provide an oral presentation at the end of the program.

Applicants Needed:
Undergraduate Students (rising Juniors and Seniors), Master's or PhD students
and Postdocs with degrees in one of the following areas: Computational
Sciences; Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering;
Electrical Engineering; Mathematics, Physics

Research Location: Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD
