Subject: Internship Project – National Museum of Natural History,
Department of Invertebrate Zoology

Description:
As we gear up to move the National Mollusk Shell Collection next year, we
intend to add thousands of specimens that failed to be incorporated into the
collection due to space constraints. To accomplish this goal, a massive
amount of specimen data and image files need to be added to our database.
Database incorporation would involve learning to use K-Emu as it applies to
our specific collections and knowledge of Microsoft Excel is also necessary.
In addition, many of these specimens need to be rehoused using archival
containers, thus some conservation/curation expertise pertinent to natural
history collections will be gained by the intern. And finally, reorganizing
the specimens will need to be done, which will be based on the scientific
identification of the specimens. This will be necessary for the planners of
the collection move to assess the amount of additional space needed within
the collection to incorporate each species of shell with shells already in
the collection.

The tasks are based at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural
History, located on the Mall.
