Subject: New Paid Internship with National Park Service

Description:
Two paid internships are available with the U.S. National Park Service
National Capital Region (NCR), Office of Natural Resources and Science (NRS)
beginning in the spring semester. Interns will work closely with the NPS
Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance’s Science Education Coordinator.

Students must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland.

Two positions are currently open:

1. Citizen Science Engagement (application deadline 2-9-18)

The U. S. National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region (NCR), Office
of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) is seeking a student with a background
in science communication, science education, project leadership, or related
fields. The intern will evaluate visitor participation at the 5 picture post
locations in the National Parks of the National Capital Region. The intern
will consider the current photo contributions seeking mechanisms for
increasing citizen engagement and improving use of the images. The highly
urbanized and rapidly growing region around NCR parks makes them increasingly
important as a critical refugia for biodiversity as species expand their
ranges from the south in response to climate change. This internship has two
possible starting dates depending on intern preference; 1) mid-February for
part-time hours not to exceed 20 hours per week during the 2018 spring
semester or 2) late May for full-time hours of 40 per week during June, July,
and part of August 2018.

2. Species Baseline and Recovery (application deadline 1-19-18)

The U. S. National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region (NCR), Office
of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) is seeking an upper level student with
a background in Ecology, Habitat/Community Structure, Plant Identification,
Fire Recovery or related fields. The intern will review planting plans, park
documentation, and conduct a site inspection for the native plant meadow at
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts during winter 2018 in
preparation for a controlled fire scheduled for March 2018. Post-fire the
intern will conduct a recovery investigation, documenting the return of
species. Lastly, a site review of the native woodland garden will be
conducted to provide a baseline of pollinators for park reference. The highly
urbanized and rapidly growing region around NCR parks makes them increasingly
important as a critical refugia for biodiversity as species expand their
ranges from the south in response to climate change. We anticipate that the
internship will begin in February of 2018 (part time, up to 20 hrs/week) and
could continue through August of 2018 (full time, up to 40 hrs/week in the
summer).
