Subject: Research Experience for Undergraduates Program at UVA's Blandy
Experimental Farm in Summer 2017

Description:
Each year, the National Science Foundation supports an 11-week Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Blandy (May 22 – August 4,
2017). This nationally recognized program enables students from around the
country to participate in faculty-mentored research in ecology and the
environmental sciences. The program emphasizes experimental, field-based
approaches to a wide variety of topics such as plant-animal interactions,
pollination ecology, landscape ecology, and ecosystem ecology. Students gain
experience in experimental design, data collection, analytical techniques,
written and oral presentation of findings, and professional development
workshops.

Students receive free housing plus a stipend and food subsidy totaling more
than $7,000. Ten Undergraduate Fellowships are available each year, awarded
on a competitive basis.

Live and work alongside University of Virginia faculty in an inspirational
setting in the northern Shenandoah Valley near Winchester, VA. History and
science converge at Blandy, with more than 700 acres of forests, fields, and
the State Arboretum of Virginia. Facilities include a new laboratory, new
greenhouse, a library, kitchen, wireless internet, and dormitory
accommodations. Opportunities for study include independent or supervised
research, and involvement in environmental education and outreach programs.

Application materials and complete program descriptions are available on the
Blandy website: www.blandy.virginia.edu. The application deadline is March
1, 2017.
