Project: Consideration of inhalation studies for risk assessment of oral
exposure of metals
Project Summary:
The objective of this project is to evaluate the relevance and significance
of data from inhalation studies for risk assessment of oral exposure to
metals such as cobalt, nickel and cadmium. This project will involve
collection and review of published pharmacokinetic data from the scientific
literature for assessment of internal exposure of inhalation versus oral
exposure to metals. Furthermore, the collected data will be utilized for
building, validating and applying a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic
(PBPK) model to perform route to route extrapolation.
Skills:
The selected candidate will receive training for developing the following
skills:
• Experience in collection and review of pharmacokinetic data followed by
utilization of the data for estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters.
• Understanding of basic pharmacokinetic modeling with hands-on exercises
using commonly-available pharmacokinetic softwares.
• Knowledge of the use of pharmacokinetic analysis for evaluation of
toxicological data and performing safety assessment of test substances.
• Opportunities of presenting the analyzed data and reporting research
findings
Requirements:
The candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate
program majoring in a discipline of science such as biology and chemistry.
Coursework in pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, physiology or
related discipline is preferred but not required.
