Subject: Guest Lecture by Dr. Michael Baumann of NIDA

Description: In 2012, Dr. Michael Baumann formed the Designer Drug Research
Unit to assist the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and agencies around
the world in characterizing new psychoactive substances, otherwise known as
designer drugs. Designer drugs, often given innocuous names like “spice”
and “bath salts”, are extremely harmful substances that, because they are
chemically distinct from Schedule I and Schedule II drugs, are quasi-legal.
Dr. Baumann’s research, which has been featured in Chemical & Engineering
News as well as other publications, studies the neurochemistry of designer
drugs to solve the mechanisms by which they function. His work has helped the
United States and multiple countries in Europe criminalize certain designer
drugs that were implicated in the deaths of users. We invite everyone to
attend a seminar on his research, which will be geared toward undergraduate
students, on Thursday, October 20th at 6pm in CHEM 1402.
