Subject: Looking for ULA for BSCI103, 160, 202, 222 - deadline Nov 26th

Description:
BSCI Undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) Spring 2019

The Biological Sciences Program within the College of Computer, Mathematical
and Natural Sciences, will employ Learning Assistants (LAs) in the Spring of
2019 for BSCI103 (Dr. Raupp); BSCI160 (Dr. Shofner); BSCI202 (Dr. O’Brien);
and BSCI222 (Dr. Paczolt). The BSCI LA program is designed to develop
teaching, organizational and communication skills and provide a leadership
opportunity for undergraduates. This is a NON-PAID position; student will be
able to gain credits for their work. Each LA will be required to perform the
duties listed below.


LA duties will include:
- Attend lectures.
- Adequately prepare for answering questions from students about the lecture
material
- Grade lecture assignments determined by faculty instructor
- Facilitate in-class activities
- Be available one week prior to the beginning of classes for LA meeting with
instructor
- Register in TLTC333 Academic Peer Mentoring (1 credit). This course will
provide the fundamental skills to support lecture activities
- Register for 1 credit course (BSCI279T, section TBD or TLTC399). This one
credit course is designed to give credit to Learning Assistants (LA) for time
spent with faculty helping inside and outside the classroom.

LAs must complete FERPA training during the first week of classes. This work
will require 5-7 hours per week, depending on the course requirements.  This
is a for-credit position.  Do to time commitments for
this position undergraduate students may be enrolled for only one LA position
in any given semester.

LA APPLICATIONS ARE DUE NOVEMBER 26, 2018.

Minimum application requirements:
-Second year student
-Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher (exceptions may be made on a case-by-case
basis)
-Have taken the course they wish to LA at UMCP and earned a grade of B or
higher.
-Students with AP credit for BSCI160 will have completed the next higher
level course with a grade of B or higher
-For BSCI103 a LA will have earned a grade of B or higher in BSCI160 or
BSCI170 taken at UMCP.
-Sufficient time free for the LA position
-Time free to attend lectures
-Meet for an hour a week to discuss course material

LA positions will be filled based on staffing needs and applicant
backgrounds. The courses available for LAs are:

BSCI103 The World of Biology. An introduction to modern biology for the
non-science major.
Dr. Raupp: TuTh 12:30-1:45pm

BSCI160 Principles of Ecology and Evolution (former BSCI106). Basic
principles of biology with special emphasis on ecology, evolution, and
diversity.
Dr. Shofner: TuTh 9:30-10:45am
Dr. Shofner: TuTh 12:30-1:45pm

BSCI202 Human Anatomy and Physiology II. Anatomy and physiology of the
cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, digestive, urinary and reproductive
systems.
Dr. O’Brien: TuTh 8-9:15am

BSCI222 Principles of Genetics. Principles and mechanisms of heredity and
gene expression
Dr. Paczolt: TuTh 12:30-1:45pm, prep meeting Friday 1-2pm
