ABOUT THE TALK
While gaming and entertainment have propelled immense growth in the use of
virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), are these technologies
really capable of changing our society? Amitabh Varshney and his team at the
Maryland Blended Reality Center believe so, and they're currently working on
projects that can literally save lives and transform how we interact with the
world around us. Varshney will discuss the use of VR and AR in emergency
medicine, both for diagnostic imaging and medical training. Other work
involves the use of VR to help law enforcement agencies recognize and combat
implicit bias. And his team's work with creative artists at UMD offers
exciting new ways for people to experience the joy and beauty of an opera
performance.
