Subject: Two Opportunities for Machine Vision (MV), 3D Modeling and
Simulation, and Robotics Internships (RoboWeeds) in Agriculture at USDA
Beltsvill

Description:
The Sustainable Agricultural Systems Lab (SASL) is investigating ways to
develop an automated machine to kill weeds. The machine needs to be trained
using real and synthetic weed images. After training, an efficient simulation
system will be created to support the development of an automated system that
precisely kills and/or removes weeds. We are looking for talented and
motivated undergraduate students interested in honing their simulation and
machine vision (MV) skills and applying them to real-world agricultural
problems. Interns will 1) use synthetic images to develop MV models, 2)
create a simulation system representing cover crop field-weeds interactions
using software such as Gazebo/ROS/Unreal Engine/Blender, and 3) design and
implement a robotics system that kills weeds using mechanical tools and/or
microdose nozzles/jets.
Benefits. Interns will gain valuable experience and develop skills much
needed in modeling, simulation, and robotics positions. Location options.
Work at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (Beltsville, MD) or work
remotely, as agreed upon. Description. Two Interns (one each in robotics and
MV) will work with robotics, MV scientists, ag domain experts to improve an
existing weed image dataset and develop automated weeding machines.
