Dr. Zyngmunt Galdzicki with the Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics at Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD is seeking a
Research Assistant to support his laboratory. The incumbent would be
responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in
collaboration with a research team.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

1 Assists in executing and analyzing biochemical and cell biological
experiments related to a Collaborative Health Initiative Research Program
(CHIRP)-funded research project entitled: “Sleep Deficits and Physiological
Stress in High Altitude Conditions".
Performs independent laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols
which will involve specialized procedures including: isolation of human and
mouse monocytes and mouse brain samples, nucleic acid
extraction/purification/transfection, genomic analysis in collaboration with
The American Genome Center (USUHS), qRT-PCR, preparation of whole cell and/or
fractionated lysates, immunoprecipitation and Western blotting, flow
cytometry, multiplexing ELISA assays and other microtiter plate assays,
immunohistochemistry, genotyping, and other techniques as needed/required by
the laboratory.
   Interacts with sleep study recruiters to collect and handle human PBMC
samples, and keeps detailed records of all samples and associated
experiments.
Processes and interprets experimental data, and prepares accurate and timely
research reports.
   Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific
meetings and for publication in journals.
Learns and applies cutting edge technologies, analytical abilities combined
with personal interaction in a highly creative and dynamic scientific
environment.
   Assists with maintaining an accurate inventory of laboratory supplies, and
places orders for supplies as necessary.
   Assists with training laboratory staff as needed.
.Maintains cleanliness of laboratory areas and performs routine maintenance
tasks on laboratory equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Competence in all routine areas
of modern cellular and molecular biology including mammalian cell culture,
cell transfection, recombinant DNA technology, immunohistochemistry and
immunoblotting. Preference for candidates with any experience studying
metabolic reprogramming and hypoxia related pathways in monocytes, including
flow cytometric-based assays. Subject knowledge and expertise in immunology
and molecular biology as reflected by contributions to publications in
appropriate peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  B.S. in Biology or related
discipline

Minimum Experience:  0-2 years

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work
with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: n/a

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  May provide guidance to students and
laboratory staff

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment; working with biohazardous
materials and human blood products; may require working evenings and weekends
