Subject: Undergraduate Research Position in the Kim Lab, ANSC (2021)
Description:
A summer research assistant position is available for an undergraduate
student in the Byung-Eun Kim lab in the Department of Animal and Avian
Sciences (https://agnr.umd.edu/about/directory/byung-eun-kim).
The Kim lab uses a combination of genetics, cell biology, molecular biology,
and biochemical approaches to study transport and trafficking of essential
metals such as copper and iron. Dysregulation of acquisition, utilization, or
excretion of these micronutrients can lead to severe health consequences in
animals and humans. The Kim lab offers a variety of projects utilizing
mammalian cell culture, C. elegans, and mouse models to study organismal
metal homeostasis and metal-dependent metabolism.
The ideal candidate would demonstrate academic success in the life sciences,
and more importantly, a strong desire to carry out exciting new research
throughout the pursuit of their undergraduate degree. Dr. Kim is particularly
interested in students intending to pursue graduate education, as this
position will prepare the student with basic research skills required to
thrive in a research environment. All training will be provided, although
the student must possess a willingness to learn quickly and take on new
challenges and responsibilities throughout the project.
Ideally the project would be extended over the course of at least one and a
half years, with the goal of making the undergraduate research student a
fully integrated member of the lab. For more information regarding projects
in the lab, please contact Dr. Kim (at [log in to unmask]) with specific
questions.
