Subject: Research Assistant II (Microbiology - 215788)

Description:

HJF is seeking a Research Assistant II to support the Microbiology Department
located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF
provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the
Microbiology Department and USU.

The incumbent provides research support in pre-clinical efficacy studies for
candidate antibiotics and vaccines in the gonorrhea mouse model in the
laboratory of Dr. Ann Jerse in the Department of Microbiology at the
Uniformed Services University.

This individual will be working very closely with the senior staff scientist
with animals.  This responsibility includes, housing, keeping detail records
and replicating experiments.  Additional laboratory and technical support to
senior technical and professional staff.

Responsibilities:
1.Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other
procedures. Ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous
materials. (20%)
2.Applies quality control measures as outlined/required by the protocol.
Provides basic data analysis. (20%)
3.Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and
organization of data, and maintaining databases. Makes detailed observations
on experiments. (35%)
4.Assists in the preparation of reports, publications, and presentations.
(15%)
5.Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected
tasks. May provide basic instruction to other lab staff. (10%)
6.May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by
the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required
training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory
techniques including basic bacteriological and molecular techniques; ability
to follow general instructions; good communization and analytical skills.
Previous animal handling is desired.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology required. Master’s
degree in Microbiology or Immunology preferred.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 3-5 years of relevant work
experience required.

Work Environment: Set in a laboratory environment.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I
investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
