HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Diagnostics and
Countermeasures Branch (DCB) located at Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research in Rockville, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and
programmatic support services to DCB.
Receives, accessions, performs data entry, processes and performs archival
storage of biospecimens for clinical research, sponsored clinical trials,
on-clinical research, and clinical testing. Performs standardized procedures
in strict accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, Good
Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), and accrediting agencies to include the
College of American Pathologist (CAP) and DOD Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Program (CLIP).
NOTE: As per Executive Order 14042, all HJF employees are required to be
fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination or an approved
religious or medical accommodation will be required.
Responsibilities:
1.Receives and accessions biospecimens to include, whole blood, whole blood
products, cells, tissue, swabs from clinical trial sites. Inventories samples
and documents the receipt of the samples in accordance with standard
operating procedures (SOPs).
2.Visually inspects specimens for quality and documentation for data
accuracy, follows specimen rejection criteria, communicates with external
sites to resolve discrepancies and enters data into electronic specimen
tracking systems, e.g., Freezerworks, LDMS
3.Performs biospecimen processing to include, but not limited to high volume
PBMC processing, e.g. processing for serum, plasma, and peripheral blood
mononuclear cells (PBMCs) for functional and other studies.
4.Performs specimen handling for long term archival storage, retrieval,
inventory, and disposal activities; prepares aliquots and/or specimens and
related data for shipment/transfer to outside laboratories, collaborators,
and investigators/Institutions.
5.Conducts specimen processing and all laboratory activates in compliance
with GCLP, CAP, and CLIP standards.
6.May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by
the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required
training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of laboratory terminology
and safe work practices. Ability to follow standard operating procedures,
work in a team environment, excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: A minimum of 0-2 years of
experience required.
Physical Capabilities: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs. Includes a
variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current or exposure to chemicals.
Work Environment: This position takes place in a laboratory setting. Must be
able to stand and/or sit for lengthy periods to include ,but not limited to
processing of specimens, operation of instrumentation, and data analysis at a
computer terminal.
Work Arrangement: 100% on-site required.
Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I
investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background
