Delft University of Technology seeks to appoint a Post-doc for

Model-based Microfluidic Measurement of Diffusion
=================================================
Department/faculty: Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering
Level: PhD
Working hours: Maximum of 38 hours per week (1 FTE)
Contract: 1.5 years
Salary: Maximum of €3678 per month gross

Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering
==============================================
The 3ME Faculty trains committed engineering students and PhD candidates
in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical,
maritime and materials engineering. 3ME is the epitome of a dynamic,
innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable
economic and social benefits.
This project is a cooperation between the Process and Energy Department
and the Department of Biotechnology of TU Delft. The work will be carried
out jointly in the groups for Intensified Reaction and Separation Systems
of Profs. Peter Jansens and Andrzej Stankiewicz and the Bioseparation
Technology group of Prof. Luuk van der Wielen.

Job description
===============
The main aim of this project is the development of a rapid measurement
technique for multicomponent diffusion coefficients. The setup exploits
the unique features offered by micro-technology. The novel setup will be
applied to both biological systems as well as classical solvent systems
and enable high-throughput analysis of novel (bio)chemical systems with
respect to mass transport characteristics. This project should thus
provide a basic tool of immediate value in a broad range of process
applications ranging from protein purification to CO2 capture.

The work will consist of theoretical studies as well as their experimental
validation. The experimental part will focus on the setup and run of a
micro-fluidic device for diffusion measurements. A variety of measurement
techniques will be employed. The existing prototype device is to be
adapted and rigorously optimized based on model-based studies employing
computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The resulting novel device should be
validated for multicomponent diffusion of proteins as well as for novel
solvents related to CO2 capture. Future applications and extensions of the
setup should be explored.

Requirements
============
We seek a candidate with an excellent PhD in an area of (bio-)chemical
engineering, fluid mechanics or a related field. Knowledge and experience
in the fields of micro-technology, computational fluid mechanics,
modelling/optimization and/or multicomponent mass transfer in (bio)
chemical mixtures would be advantageous. Fluency in English is a
prerequisite.

Conditions of employment
========================
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work
week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of
assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA').
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement
for Dutch Universities.
