Postdoctoral positions are currently available in the Control Systems Engineering Laboratory at
Arizona State University (CSEL, http://www.fulton.asu.edu/~csel). These positions are in support
of two recently funded National Institute of Health grants focused on applying system
identification, dynamical systems, and control engineering principles to develop novel time-
varying interventions for chronic, relapsing disorders in behavioral health. These interventions
play an increasingly prominent role in a wide variety of areas of public health importance,
including drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, cancer, mental health, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular health,
and aging.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline with strong demonstrated
quantitative and computing skills. Ideal candidates would have expertise in the following areas:
control systems engineering, system identification, simulation and optimization of stochastic
systems, and hybrid dynamical systems. Activities associated with these projects will be
performed in a highly interdisciplinary environment involving psychologists (clinical, quantitative,
developmental), statisticians, and computer scientists. Strong communication skills and the ability
to interact in a very diverse intellectual environment are a must. Women and underrepresented
minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Additional information regarding CSEL's efforts in
this area can be found in http://www.fulton.asu.edu/~csel/Publications-AdaptivePrev.htm.
A competitive salary is available for well-qualified individuals. The initial appointment is for one
year, renewable for multiple years based on performance and continued availability of funds. Interested individuals should apply to Professor Daniel E. Rivera, Program Director, Control
Systems Engineering Laboratory at [log in to unmask] Please include a CV, a list of three
references, and a brief statement of research interests. Copies of significant authored
publications in themes relevant to the projects are welcome. NOTE: Professor Rivera will be
attending the upcoming 2008 American Control Conference in Seattle and is open to meeting with
any interested candidates during that time. If you wish to pursue this opportunity please contact
him at your earliest opportunity at [log in to unmask]
