The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) and the Center for
Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have several
immediate openings for Ph.D. level graduate students and post-doctoral research associates in
several areas, including heat transfer (boiling, condensing, and single phase) and multi-phase flow
in micro and conventional scales, thermal management of large-scale systems, and modeling and
control of distributed, integrated electronic systems. These positions are part of a recently
awarded five-year Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) project entitled “System-
Level Approach for Multi-Phase, Nanotechnology-Enhanced Cooling of High-Power
Microelectronic Systems.”
The graduate students will conduct experimental studies, and also will be involved in some
modeling and validation; one position is allocated to support the overall system modeling and
design effort. The prospective candidates should have strong backgrounds and interest in at least
one (but preferably more) of the following topics: convective heat transfer, experimental methods,
liquid-gas two-phase flows, microfabrication technology, microelectromechanical systems
(MEMS), system level modeling, control system design, or Fluent software.
The post-doctoral research associates will support the three principle investigators in performing
research and instructing and advising several graduate students working on the various aspects of
the project. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline,
and a strong background and interest in two or more of the following topics: experimental heat
transfer, two-phase flows, system level thermal management, or control system design. The
candidate should be highly motivated, have good experimental skills, and should be able to
function effectively in a multidisciplinary team across departments and universities. Interested
candidate should contact Prof. Michael Jensen. Please include a curriculum vitae and provide
names of at least two professional references. The ad can be found on the Rensselaer Human
Resources website at
