WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The Department of Chemical Engineering in the Benjamin M. Statler
College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University
invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow to support Dr. Debangsu
Bhattacharyya’s research program on development of first-principles
steady-state and dynamic models of traditional and high-viscosity
solvent systems for CO2 capture and use of these models for studies such
as optimization, uncertainty quantification, and process control. The
post-combustion capture and compression system will generate a
sequestration-ready CO2 stream using the flue gas from a baseline
supercritical pulverized coal plant. The successful candidate will play
a key role in the Process Modeling Team for the U.S. Department of
Energy’s (DOE) Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSITM) for
accelerated advancement of potential carbon capture technologies. The
successful candidate will collaborate closely with CCSI researchers at
the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and several
other national laboratories and universities.
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a
related discipline when the appointment begins. In addition, the
successful candidate must possess some of the following qualifications:
§ Demonstrated sound knowledge of using commercial steady-state
and dynamic process modeling software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus
Dynamics, etc.
§ Understanding of the thermodynamic and transport models and
kinetics of key unit operations that are the building blocks of
solvent-based CO2 capture processes.
§ Understanding of the rate-based models for electrolyte systems.
§ Development of partial differential equation (PDE)-based process
model of representative energy systems or energy conversion devices
considering the physics of the system by using commercial software such
as Aspen Custom Modeler, gPROMS, Matlab, etc.
§ Ability to guide and mentor graduate students and collaborate
effectively with co-investigators.
§ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as
demonstrated, for example, by publications in peer-reviewed journals and
presentations at technical meetings.
§ Ability to meet deadlines and prepare, present, and report
results effectively.
Applicants must include a curriculum vita and a statement of research
interests, unofficial copies of all university transcripts, as well as
names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least three
professional references. Applicants must provide evidence of
eligibility to work in the U.S. and ability to obtain necessary security
clearances to work at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)
when the appointment begins.
Review of the applications will begin May 1, 2013, but applications
will be accepted until the position is filled. Women and minorities are
encouraged to apply. Please send application materials by e-mail to
