Dear Colleagues,

According to the current CAST by-laws, the recipients of the CAST awards, except the Directors' (presentation and poster) Awards, are selected by two independent committees:

1) The Awards Committee, which consists of the six CAST Directors and five additional members, selects the recipients of the (a) Computing in Chemical Engineering, (b) Computing Practice, (c) CAST Outstanding Young Researcher, and (d) David Himmelblau Awards.

2) The Advisory Committee, which normally consists of the three most recent recipients of the Computing in Chemical Engineering Award, selects the recipient of the David Smith Jr. Graduate Publication Award.

To streamline the overall process, we propose the following:

1) Have one committee, the Awards Committee, select the recipient of all five aforementioned awards.

2) Expand the Awards Committee to include the three most recent recipients of the Computing in Chemical Engineering Award.

We also propose changes to correct a typo and the sequence of Sections in Article IX (Awards).

Please see attached file for the specific amendments.

The CAST bylaws stipulate that "A proposed amendment and ballot shall be sent to all Division members by first-class mail or electronic communication means".

Accordingly, the ballot will be included in the 2018 CAST elections for CAST officers and programming chairs.

The current bylaws can be found at:
