PhD IN PLANT-WIDE FAULT DIAGNOSIS EXPLOITING PROCESS CONNECTIVITY
INFORMATION.

A PhD studentship of three years duration sponsored by a blue-chip
industrial company is available starting as soon as possible after 1st
October 2007. The studentship offers a stipend of 14,600 UK pounds p.a.
plus tuition fees (home or international). The stipend increases each year
with inflation. The studentship is in the Centre for Process Systems
Engineering (CPSE) within the Department of Chemical Engineering at
Imperial College London. The academic project supervisor is Professor Nina
F. Thornhill.

The aim of the project is to conduct research and establish new ways to
capture and manipulate information from the schematic of a chemical process
or refinery (a diagram showing the layout of the plant) in order to give an
automated means of diagnosing operating problems. The practical outcome
will be improved fault diagnosis using measurements, information from the
process schematic and process understanding (know-how).

The student will have an opportunity of a placement with the sponsoring
company to conduct trials of his or her research ideas.

Further details and information about how to apply are at:

Closing Date: 25 September 2007.
