A part-time student position is available at USDA-ARS Agricultural Research
Center,
Genetic Improvement for Fruits and Vegetables Lab in Beltsville, MD (10
minutes from
College Park). US citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is
required for
males born after 12/31/1959. Rising sophomores and above can be hired at the
GS2 level
($14.30/hr). Rising juniors and seniors with least 6 semester hours in any
combination of
scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics,
entomology, botany,
physics, agriculture, or mathematics, can be hired at a GS3 level
($15.60/hr). Future
scientists from underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to
apply.
The project involves molecular biology, plant sciences, microbiology, and
genomic
analyses of plant disease. We exploit modern molecular biology and
biotechnology tools
to understand the molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogens and develop
novel
disease control strategies including genetic control, chemical control, and
biological
control. Some of the laboratory techniques that will be employed as part of
the project are
gDNA and RNA extraction, molecular cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, bacterial
transformation,
sterile technique, microbial transfers, gene analysis, plant pathology
infections in the
greenhouse, and plant tissue culture.
The position is for 10-15 hours/week research position during the Fall and
Spring
semesters with flexible scheduling options. Following successful project
progress, the
position may transition to a paid summer internship of 15-30 hours/week
