Subject: Opportunity for volunteer researcher to describe new species and
redescribe known species of daddy longlegs or harvestmen (Order Opiliones).

Description:
When a new species is discovered, it must be formally named and described.
Describing a new species consists of verbal descriptions using technically
appropriate language, photographs and drawings of its unique characteristics,
maps of geographic distributions, comparisons with other species, etc. In
some cases, species that are already known must be re-described, because the
original descriptions were too superficial to allow unambiguous
identification of the species. For examples of good species descriptions, the
kind that the volunteer will assist in making, see the following

Interested students should contact Dr. Jeff Shultz ([log in to unmask]) in the
Department of Entomology for additional information. Experience with basic
biology and microscopy and the use of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator would
be useful but are not required.
