Subject: Recruiting Students for NASA SUITS AR Challenge

A team of UMD students from the XR Club has been OFFICIALLY selected by NASA
to participate in the 2021 NASA SUITS challenge, and we are looking for
additional talented students to help us out on this project! NASA SUITS is a
competition created by NASA where teams of college students design an
augmented reality interface for the space helmets that will be used by
astronauts on their 2024 mission to the moon.

The challenge runs from now until April, with the majority of the work being
in the first half of the semester. NASA describes the workload as equivalent
to that of a 3-credit course. While involvement with this project is a
serious commitment, it can also be incredibly rewarding, as our prototype may
be tested in official NASA facilities in Houston, portions of our application
could be integrated into the actual solution used by astronauts on the
Artemis missions, and our work could lead to publication in a technical
conference or research journal!

Available positions include:

Outreach Coordinator - Responsible for managing our social media updates,
planning virtual outreach events to engage with the public (including K-12
and University groups), editing promotional content like videos and flyers as

3D Artist - Responsible for 3D modeling, rigging, texturing, and animation.
An ideal candidate would have some experience with Autodesk Maya or Blender
and would be willing to learn additional skills as necessary.

Graphic Designer – Responsible for designing 2D assets, such as team logo
and various icons in application, and layout of various 2D screens in
application. Prior graphic design experience preferred.

UX/HCI Researcher - Responsible for devising research procedures (both in
virtual and in-person settings), formulating research questions and metrics
to obtain feedback on the efficiency and effectiveness of the application's
UIs, obtaining any necessary approvals from UMD's Institutional Review Board
(IRB), conducting the research with volunteer participants, contributing to
our final paper and poster. An ideal candidate would be an info science
major, have taken CMSC434, and/or have prior research experience.

Programmer - Responsible for working with the other programmers to develop
our application for the Microsoft HoloLens 2 headset. Prior experience with
Unity required.

If you think you would be a good fit for any of the roles above or would like
further information, feel free to reach out to us at [log in to unmask]
