Subject: Laboratory Assistant (Part-Time)
Description:
JOB SUMMARY:
The B cell Biology Core at the Military HIV Research Program is looking for a
candidate to work part-time providing technical support, while gaining
laboratory experience. Hours can be flexible around class schedules. The B
cell Biology Core studies the role of humoral immunity in HIV pathogenesis
and vaccine development. The new hire will perform basic laboratory duties in
support of research staff, including administrative tasks and lab
maintenance. Applicants must have excellent attention to detail, ability to
maintain accurate records, learn new skills quickly, and work independently
following training. Minimal experience is required. Basic understanding of
biological techniques, including aseptic technique, and ability to work in a
BSL2 environment would be beneficial. The primary role will be in laboratory
maintenance but other duties and projects may be assigned depending on the
abilities of the person hired.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Assists in general laboratory maintenance
2. Maintains common supply stocks
3. Prepares buffers and reagents as needed
4. Disposes of biohazardous trash and recyclable materials properly
5. Maintains reagent and specimen inventories
6. Cleans and sterilizes glassware and other materials
7. Adheres to established laboratory safety procedures and guidelines
8. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education/Training Requirements
High School Diploma
Introductory college level courses in biology and chemistry
Minimum Experience
0-2 years laboratory experience (can include student work experience)
Physical Capabilities
Job performance requires movement around and between several laboratories,
with some sitting at laboratory benches. May require long periods of
standing, although breaks will be provided as required and needed. Fine motor
coordination in manipulation of laboratory materials is essential.
