Position Title: Research Technician, Microbiology

Position Description: The Wound Infections Department at the Walter Reed Army
Institute of Research is looking for a Research Technician with a strong
background in biology or other life sciences degrees, with microbiology and
molecular biology experience, to help with the development of new
antimicrobials (small molecules, immunological products) against
multidrug-resistant bacteria (Gram-negative and Gram-positive).  Projects are
centered on the testing of novel antibacterials using standard in vitro
approaches such as MIC, FIC, biofilm, time-kill assays, and tissue culture
assays that assess the efficacy of antibacterial products. Successful
antibacterials will be then be tested in small animal models of infection,
which the candidate could also learn if desired. Candidates ideally should
have strong experience with microbiological techniques, aseptic technique,
molecular biology (microbial genetics, protein biochemistry) and be willing
to train in order to learn and perform additional microbiology laboratory
skills.  Further, candidates must be able to manage supplies and resources,
maintain data and results associated with a study, and any associated safety
and training documentation. Candidates with a clinical microbiology
background or previous experience in the assays or animal modeling mentioned
above will be preferred.

Position Location: Silver Spring, MD (northeast of Washington D.C.), Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research.

• Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences is required. Microbiology experience
is preferred.
• Candidates with a Master’s degree in Life Sciences will also be
considered.
• U.S. Citizenship, green card, or proof of green card application is
required.
• Enrollment and attendance in one class per year is required for ORISE
because the position is fellowship supporting continuing education before
graduate school programs (Medical, Veterinary, or Graduate school). Previous
employees have taken classes at the nearby: NIH, USUHS, Johns Hopkins
