Laboratory and Field Research in Protist Genomics and Biodiversity

Delwiche Lab

We seek highly motivated undergraduates to assist in laboratory operations and to carry out directed research projects.  The initial research projects will involve studies of biological diversity in eukaryotic microorganisms including dinoflagellates and green algae.  Methods will include Sanger and "next-gen" sequencing techniques, as well as analysis of genome size and composition using microscopy and flow cytometry.  The work will include opportunities for laboratory, field, and computational research as appropriate to the interests and skills of the student.  Initially, the work will consist primarily of supervised work including (but not limited to) DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, DNA sequencing, protein purification, and data entry.  With added experience the student will be given increased independence, with a goal of research leading toward academic publication, and could lead to participation in a Departmental honors program or HHMI-funded independent.
