Subject: Internships at the National Museum of Natural History

Intern/Volunteer Project with the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the
Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum

Starting in March, 2014, the Department of Invertebrate Zoology began to move
both staff and dry specimen collections into recently renovated space at the
museum.The move of our various dry collections is a massive project that will
take approximately 3-5 years to complete. It involves collections both at the
Natural History Museum downtown on the Mall and at our remote storage
facility in Suitland, MD.

We are currently at the halfway point with respect to rearranging and moving
the recent corals. I have some long-term volunteers that are helping to
coordinate the move of this collection and welcome additional assistance from
interested students.

The next collections to be moved are the Tertiary fossil coral collection and
a collection of miscellaneous mollusks, all of which are currently stored at
our Museum Support Center, located in Suitland, MD. To facilitate these
moves, assistance based at that facility is crucial. This facility is an easy
walk from the Suitland Metro station. Parking inside the compound is free and
a reasonably priced on-site cafeteria exists.

Involving students with our collection moves is a win-win situation. Students
provide a competent, diligent and resourceful option for manpower to
accomplish the tasks at hand. The students gain necessary experience in the
curation of collection specimens and can apply techniques they have learned
to improve the conservation of museum specimens.
