Subject:  Call for Nominations - Undergraduate University Awards

Description:
Each spring the University honors outstanding scholar-leaders at the
University Awards Program.  Hosted by the Adele H. Stamp Student Union -
Center for Campus Life and Omicron Delta Kappa, this program features some of
the University’s most prestigious awards. This year’s 39th Annual
University Student Leadership Awards Program will be held on Sunday, May 3,
2020. I am writing to enlist your assistance in identifying candidates for
each of the honors detailed below. You are invited to nominate individuals
for these awards.

Senior Awards for August 2019, December 2019 and May 2020 Graduates

The H. C. Byrd Citizenship Award, is presented as a memorial to the late
President Emeritus H. C. Byrd, to a student who identifies as a male member
of the graduating senior class who during their collegiate career have most
nearly typified the model citizen and have contributed significantly to the
general advancement of the interests of the University.

The Sally S. Byrd Citizenship Award, is presented as a memorial to the late
President Emeritus H. C. Byrd’s mother Sally Sterling Byrd, to a student
who identifies as a female member of the graduating senior class who during
their collegiate career have most nearly typified the model citizen and have
contributed significantly to the general advancement of the interests of the
University.

The Wilson H. Elkins Award, is presented to a member of the graduating senior
class who has displayed outstanding involvement and leadership in campus
activities and who has contributed significantly to the general advancement
of student affairs.

The Bethune Award, named in honor of the African-American educator Mary
McLeod Bethune, is presented to a member of the graduating senior class who
has contributed most significantly to the advancement of the African-American
student community at Maryland and the general interest of the University.

The La Raza Unida Award, which translates as “the people united,” is
presented to a member of the graduating senior class who has contributed most
significantly to the advancement of the Latino(a) student community at
Maryland and the general interest of the University.

The Lorde-O’Leary Award, named after writer/activist Audre Lorde and the
late University of Maryland Professor Ron O’Leary, is presented to a member
of the graduating senior class who has contributed most significantly to the
advancement of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender student community
at Maryland and the general interest of the University.

The Vera Cruz-Kochiyama Award, named after labor activist Phillip Vera Cruz
and the Civil Rights Activist Yuri Kochiyama, is presented to a member of the
graduating senior class who has contributed most significantly to the Asian
Pacific American student community at Maryland and the general interest of
the University.

Junior Award for May 2021 Graduates

The William E. Kirwan Award is presented to a junior who will graduate May
2021 and who has exhibited outstanding leadership and commitment to the
college community. Nominees will be evaluated on their academic performance;
involvement in student activities; community service; and promotion of campus
diversity/race relations, international relations and/or international
understanding.

Undergraduate Student Awards

The Loving Award, named in honor of Mildred and Richard Loving, for their
bravery and perseverance in invalidating miscegenation laws via the landmark
Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, is presented to a member of the
University of Maryland undergraduate community who has demonstrated a
significant and ongoing commitment to multiracial and cross-cultural causes
and communities.

The Sarah Winnemucca Award, named in honor of Paiute activist, educator, and
author Sarah Winnemucca, for her tireless dedication in advocating for the
rights of Native American communities, is presented to a member of the
University of Maryland undergraduate community who has demonstrated a
significant and ongoing commitment to Native American Indian and Indigenous
communities.

You may access the nomination form at
https://stampunion.umd.edu/awards/nominate/Undergraduate.aspx. Enter the
nominee’s name and umd.edu email address. Utilize the student lookup
feature, if needed. The nominee’s personal and academic information will
automatically populate. Nominations should be submitted by 4:00 p.m., Friday,
February 14, 2020. The student nominee will receive an email inviting them to
apply after the nomination deadline. Their application and essay must be
submitted by 12:00 p.m., Monday, March 9, 2020 for full consideration.
