Sr. Research Engineer - APECS R&D
The WVU Research Corporation seeks applications for the position of
Senior Research Engineer/Scientist – APECS R&D. The position is in the
National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE) at West Virginia
University (WVU) and serves as an R&D liaison to the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) in support
of further development of its R&D100 award-winning Advanced Process
Engineering Co-Simulator (APECS). The applicant will establish a
comprehensive and collaborative R&D program focused on the continued
development and demonstration of the APECS software framework for
high-fidelity process/equipment co-simulation to improve the design,
analysis, and optimization of fossil-energy systems.
The APECS R&D Senior Research Engineer/Scientist will also contribute to
the recently launched Collaboratory for Process & Dynamic Systems
Research (‘Collaboratory’) between NETL, WVU, the University of
Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. The objective of the
Collaboratory is to accelerate the development of an advanced process
systems engineering capability for fossil energy systems and promote its
use to produce increasingly valuable outcomes for DOE and the Nation.
This assignment will be accomplished through the continued development
and application of NETL’s APECS technology, along with an increased
focus on R&D activities in the areas of dynamic simulation, advanced
process control, stochastic analysis, plant-wide optimization, and
real-time training applications.
The APECS R&D Senior Research Engineer/Scientist will be assigned
management and coordination duties in all major phases of the APECS R&D
program, including detailed planning, research projects, software
development, testing, deployment, documentation, and training, as well
as on-going support within the Collaboratory. The incumbent will also
contribute technically to R&D projects in the areas of CAPE-OPEN
software interoperability, reduced-order modeling, co-simulation
solution strategies and advanced analysis tools, post-processing and
visualization, integration with virtual engineering software,
distributed and parallel computing, and dynamic simulation. In
addition, the incumbent will coordinate Collaboratory interactions with
APECS technology collaborators and advisory panel members, including
members from universities, research organizations, software vendors, and
end users from the process and energy industries.
Responsibilities require advanced knowledge of processes and procedures
to support duties of the position and demonstrated knowledge of
steady-state and dynamic process simulation, CFD, process/CFD
co-simulation, and reduced-order modeling. Supervision of others is not
required; however, project lead responsibilities, sharing of knowledge
and team participation is expected in the role. The successful
candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, or a closely related field, and at least 5 years of
experience in the development of process systems engineering and/or CFD
software; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience to
fulfill position requirements. A strong working knowledge of the
process industry CAPE-OPEN software standard, C++/object-oriented
programming, and COM/CORBA middleware technology is also required.
Competitive salary and benefits package offered. Review of applications
is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled. The WVURC is
an EEO employer. In order to receive consideration for this position,
applicants should send a resume, cover letter and three professional
references to: WVURC Department of Human Resources, PO Box 6221,
Morgantown, WV 26506; or, by email to [log in to unmask]
Applications should reference the APECS R&D position.
