The Automatic Control Laboratory (LA) of the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for a qualified candidate to
undertake doctoral work on the

"Exploration of Biochemical Networks using Dynamic Optimization"

This interdisciplinary project will be jointly supervised by Dr. B. Chachuat
(LA, EPFL), Prof. D. Bonvin (LA, EPFL), and Prof. V. Hatzimanikatis
(Laboratory of Computational Systems Biotechnology, EPFL).

Understanding the complex regulatory circuitry and signal transduction
pathways within cells is one of the fundamental goals of systems biology.
This project aims at developing and applying systematic methodologies to
help the tasks of relating biochemical network structure to function and
uncovering the conceptual design principles by which a network operates. The
objective is to combine biophysical modeling with concepts and methods from
systems and control theory for the analysis of the steady-state and dynamic
response properties of signal transduction networks.

To pursue research in these exciting areas, the candidate should have a
masterís degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering with a
strong background in dynamics and control systems. No prior knowledge in
biochemistry and bioengineering is required, although keen interest in
getting involved in these research areas is necessary. The starting date
will be as early as possible after admission to the doctoral program.

For application, please use the form provided by the doctoral school
( and send the complete application
package, indicating your intention to be hired by the LA and including 3
reference letters, to the contact person listed hereafter. Your application
will then be forwarded to the doctoral school directly by the LA. (Please
pay no attention to the deadlines mentioned on the doctoral schoolís
webpage, for this is a specific opening to the LA.)
