Duties: The University Libraries at Virginia Tech
(www.library.edu.vt.edu) seeks a service-oriented, innovative and self
motivated Project Archivist to serve an integral role in the rapidly
expanding Special Collections Department. The successful candidate will
be direct several archival projects which are aimed at promoting Special
Collections as a center of research. This position will work closely
with existing staff to manage the reading room, build and provide
greater access to the growing manuscript and University Archives
collections, help develop the internationally known Virginia Tech April
16, 2007 Archives, and manage other core collections of the department
(Civil War, Culinary History, AWA, etc). This is a 3 year project
position. The project archivist will work closely with other library
departments to ensure consistent delivery services and follow standard
archival and library procedures.
Core responsibilities: Specific duties include managing the
internationally known Virginia Tech April 16, 200 7 Archives, processing
backlog collections using archival standards, creating EAD finding aids,
providing support for digitization efforts, maintaining a reference desk
shift and working closely with other library departments to ensure
consistent practices. Reports to the Director of Special Collections.
Collaborates with other faculty, staff, and students.
Additional Responsibilities: Maintains breadth of professional
responsibility and initiative by:
Maintaining current awareness in the library and archival profession
Providing quality services in a professional manner with a demonstrated
commitment to team efforts, service excellence and respect for others
Required Qualifications: Graduate degree in Librarianship from an
ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent at the time of appointment.
Experience in an archives or special collections, demonstrated knowledge
of archival principles and standards, evidence of strong technical and
computer skills, knowledge of digital projects and digitization
standards, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to
lift a 50 pound archival box
