PROCESS CONTROL BOOT CAMP
A Comprehensive Introduction to Process Control Practice
May 25-29, 2009
University of Alberta
Process control is much more than theory and Laplace transforms, or
using a vendor's product. The practice of process control involves
instrument calibration and characterization, process modeling and
identification, commissioning and tuning of controllers, monitoring,
alarm management and maintenance. This course provides intensive
exposure to these topics and more through a unique combination of
lectures, simulation and experimental laboratories conducted by one
of the world's foremost process control groups.
Who should attend: Recent engineering graduates, engineering
supervisors, people with new control responsibilities.
You will learn: practical aspects of control theory, application of
theory in simulation and laboratory settings, tuning of regulatory
and multivariable controllers, monitoring of process and controller
performance, justification and management of control projects.
The course includes modules on:
- Introduction to control
- Regulatory control
- Process modeling and identification
- Advanced control (model predictive control)
- Control project execution and management
The associated labs on instrumentation calibration and
characterization, process modeling for regulatory control, system
identification, PID and MPC controller tuning for performance and
robustness, controller performance assessment. Processes controlled
in the laboratory exercises include flows of liquids and gases, heat
exchange, surge tank levels and distillation column composition.
Registration details: (Cdn)$3500 per person (early bird registration
$3000 by April 24). Discounts are offered for groups of 3 or more.
Total registration is limited to 12 participants. The fees include a
copy of all instructional and background material.
