We are currently seeking interns to provide support to our organization in
the following departments:
*Project: Develop information taxonomy for SE content websites –
Washington, DC*
Duties:
· Create a content inventory, extract into a database common terms;
map terms to concepts
· Create taxonomic categories from concepts and document taxonomy
· Enter taxonomy into site content management system
· Bulk tagging of CMS documents via page-term-category mappings
· Accuracy assessment and Q/A
Looking for:
· Graduate student in Information Science , Library Science,
Information Studies
· Coursework and experience creating thesauri, taxonomies, and
domain ontologies
· Some domain knowledge of the magazine’s subject matter (broad
knowledge/interests)
· Experience classifying documents for the web is a plus
· Experience using a web CMS a plus
*Project: Social Networking **–** Magazines’ Editorial Dept
– Washington, DC *
Duties:
· Utilize social media to distribute Smithsonian.com content and
build audience
· Update Smithsonian.com content on social media sites
· Report on social media stats, growth and trends as they
relate to Smithsonian.com
· Ensure the consistency and accuracy of the magazine’s presentation
on Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter
· Maintain and update editorial content areas of Smithsonian.com
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergrad with experience with social media, HTML and
content management systems
· Fluency in Microsoft Office applications and various desktop
plug-ins
· Writing ability and general knowledge of *Smithsonian* and *
Air&Space* site content areas helpful
*Project: Social Networking and SEO – Smithsonian Journeys
– Washington, DC *
Duties:
· Utilize social media to distribute Journeys content and build
audience
· Update Journeys content on social networking sites and blogs
· Research social media for contextually related sites to identify
and add to Journeys’ network
· Report on social media stats, growth and trends as they relate to
Journeys
· Research and initiate contacts for reciprocal linking, back
linking and the like for SEO enhancement
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergrad with experience with social media, HTML and
content management systems
· Fluency in Microsoft Office applications and various desktop
plug-ins
· Writing ability and general knowledge of/interest in cultural
travel
· Familiarity with search engine optimization helpful

Duties:
· Collaborate with GoSmithsonian Editor to enhance content online
· Assist in the creation of original online-only content for
GoSmithsonian.com
· Update and maintain the editorial content areas of
GoSmithsonian.com
· Ensure the consistency and accuracy of GoSmithsonian’s online
presentation
· Create original content related to Smithsonian Institution events
and exhibitions
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergraduate in Journalism or related discipline with
the ability to report and write
· Experience with Photoshop, HTML, CSS, Web content management
systems
· Knowledge of Quark, InDesign or other desktop publishing system
helpful
*Project: SE wide Web Development/Production Intern –
Washington, DC *
Duties:
· Create digital assets for online publication from collateral
materials or other online works
· Manipulate and edit photos for use on digital properties – either
in-house (illustration) or external partner sites (e.g. Café Press)
· Assist in building web pages or microsites as required by
editorial or marketing depts
· Assist in regular content updates to websites as needed
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergraduate in digital media, web development or
related discipline
· Fluency in HTML, CSS, Photoshop, Flash and other web tools and
application

Duties:
· Leverage Flash to create interactive experiences
· Help develop and produce feature packages and tools
· Collaborate with Web Editor to enhance Smithsonian magazine
content online
· Organize and present features in user-friendly ways
· Follow projects from initial creative phase through to
presentation and final build-out
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergrad with expert level Flash skills and
experience working with dynamic content, including xml.
· Software and coding skills are helpful
· Experience in Web design that demonstrates strong fundamentals of
graphic design, usability and front-end coding.

Washington, DC *
Duties:
· Shoot and edit video for Smithsonian.com
· Collect and edit audio for Smithsonian.com
· Assist with the production of audio-driven slideshows
· Ensure the consistency and accuracy of the magazine’s visual
online presentation
· Collaborate with Web Editor to enhance Smithsonian magazine
content online
Looking for:
· Graduate or undergraduate in journalism or related discipline with
demonstrated ability to tell narrative stories with audio and video
equipment and be fluent in sound and video editing software
· Mastery of digital video cameras and equipment is essential
· Experience with HTML and other web authoring tools useful
*Project: **Ad Trafficking/Sales support **–** Smithsonian
Media – New York, NY*
· Assist in trafficking ads across the sites and in eNewsletters
· Review/update ad server setup, site specs and ad tracking across
the sites
· Process online campaigns from start to finish
· Prepare campaign reports for internal and external teams
· Provide reporting support marketing and editorial programs
· Research and report on internal advertising programs and external
completive analysis

Duties:
· To examine existing SI policies and directives related to the
Statement of Values and Code of Ethics to determine if these are current and
adequate, and to make recommendations for either updating current policies
and directives or developing new policies, guidelines, and directives.

*Project: Retail Group Support - Washington, DC *
Duties:
· Conduct market based studies on key product classifications
· Gather industry data on Catalogue and E- Commerce key metrics
· Gather industry data on destination locations ( resorts, theme
parks, etc)
· Conduct SKU performance analysis
· Consolidation , summarization of third party contracts
