Description:
The American Planning Association Library seeks a student intern for the
Fall 2009 semester. This internship in APA’s Washington D.C. office
provides a unique opportunity for an MLS student to gain experience in a
variety of facets of special librarianship. The Library serves research,
policy, and outreach staff engaged in cutting-edge projects in service
of urban & regional planners and the planning profession.
We are looking for a tech-savvy, creative, hardworking individual eager
to help us jump-start our Library’s collection and improve service.
The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to several projects,
including:
• Development, inventory, and cataloguing of a core print collection for
the DC office.
• Library space planning and user studies.
• Collection development initiatives serving our National Centers for
Planning (Green Communities Research Center, Hazards Planning Research
Center, and Planning & Community Health Research Center)
Qualifications:
Student must be currently enrolled in an MLS degree program or a recent
graduate. Academic background or interest in social sciences, urban
planning, public health or related fields preferred. Knowledge of
Library of Congress Classification, AACR2 cataloguing standards, and
ability to learn APA’s own classification system required. Excellent
organizational, communication, and writing skills and the ability to
work independently are required.
Schedule & Salary:
This position is an unpaid learning opportunity. The schedule is
flexible depending upon the student’s course schedule and the
requirements of the student’s university.
