LAC seeks for immediate consideration a Reference Librarian to provide reference and research support on a short-term contract at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. This is a short-term position that will last through December 2009. Must possess or be able to obtain Secret Clearance. Must be a US Citizen in order to be considered.
Responsibilities:
* Offers expert reference and research support to resident and distance learning students and faculty.
* Teaches library instruction classes, both formal and informal.
* Conducts orientations for new students and faculty.
* Acts as library liaison to one or more student seminars.
* Researches and prepares original bibliographies or other finding aids.
* Performs subject indexing of student writing products.
* Analyzes incoming periodicals for subject content and adds indexing data to the Staff College Automated Periodicals Index.
* Staffs the library information desk from 10 – 20 hours per week.
* Responds to telephone information, reference or research requests.
* Uses circulation and search modules of integrated library system to check out, check in, place holds, perform reference searches.
* Offers ready reference services.
Qualifications:
* Must be a US Citizen in order to be considered.
* Possess or able to obtain Secret clearance.
* Knowledge of standard and innovative library practices and procedures in library instructional services, reference and research services; knowledge of the theories, objectives principles, and techniques of librarianship.
* Knowledge of both published and unpublished research and reference sources.
* Ability to formulate and execute complex searches in full-text journal and reference databases.
* Familiarity with principles of library services to distance learners.
* Knowledge of military, political, and international affairs.
* Knowledge of safe handling of classified materials.
* Ability to understand and apply the JFSC organization, mission, curriculum, and research interests to library instruction, reference, and research settings.
* Ability to instruct library clientele to perform library research in person, via telephone or e-mail.
* Ability to present professional library briefings and orientations to meet specific customer needs.
* Ability to prioritize and work independently.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and effectively respond to changing priorities.
